An impersonator is the title given to a person who imitates or copies the behaviors or actions of another individual, usually one who is famous. There are numerous reasons why a person may choose to do this, one being entertainment. Elvis Presley was an American musician, singer and actor. Although he passed away in 1977, there are many people who perform as an Elvis impersonator.

Presley, better known simply as Elvis, is one of the most raved about cultural icons from the twentieth century. He is often referred to as the King of Rock and Roll or the King. The Mississippi-born artist started his music career in 1954 by working with Sam Phillips, owner of Sun Records.

Elvis achieved a lot of commercial success for his work in pop, rock and gospel genres. He is considered by many to be the best-selling artist in the history of recorded music. Presley is on multiple hall of fame lists, was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and continues to sell millions of records around the globe. It is not surprising that many want to emulate him.

It is worth noting that there is a difference between impersonators and cover acts. Cover acts are usually given this title because they only cover the music. Impersonators do this and more. They usually strive to portray each and every element of the person to the best of their ability, even if that means changing their appearance to match that of the famous person.

Much work is involved in this job. Some people put a lot of effort and time into the studying the person in order to give their best imitation. A lot of those in the industry are able to find success in entertainment and turn it into a career. These professionals are most commonly found near entertainment hubs around the globe, including the areas of Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York City.

The more the impersonator is like the individual they are trying to copy, the better they are. It is as simple as that. These professionals should be familiar with all the work of the artist, in addition to his or her behaviors or quirks. Authenticity is key for this job, but not all who do this take it as seriously. Some are only interested in this as a hobby or for fun. Others have made this into their livelihood and career. Impersonators may do this for people who are alive or dead. Another popular choice for impersonations is Michael Jackson.

Elvis impersonators should study the style, behaviors and music of Presley in order to be believable. There are many who will pay for the experience of seeing them live on a street corner or in a big venue. When the person who is being impersonated is dead, it may be a chance for big fans to reminisce or fulfill a dream to see the artist live, in person. This can be a lucrative business.
