Understanding The Marine Corps League

By Krystal Branch

The Marine Corps league is an organization that was chartered by Congress to deal with veteran related issues. Its charter was approved by President Roosevelt in 1937 after a nod by the 75th congress. Its foundation dates back to 1923 and credited to the legendary Commandant John A Lejeune. Its congressional charter is held under Title 36 of the United States Code.

The organization endeavors to bring members together in amity and fellowship as they promote interests of veterans and those still serving. Beyond promoting their interests, they seek to preserve the tradition of living and work as marines. It offers a platform for different generations to come together. Membership is drawn from those already serving and marines who have been discharged honorably.

MCL has activities targeting current services men, veteran marines, their families, widows and orphans. They offer unlimited voluntary assistance to the needy in whichever circumstance. They are interested in perpetuating the history of United States Marines through placing great value to relevant occasions and marking anniversaries with honor. It is a group that focuses on the past, present and future.

The MCL structure supports and organizes different programs that make it easier to accomplish their mission. They are interested and passionate about preservation of their tradition and maintaining the spirit of marines. Injured marines program seeks to provide high quality and diverse medical assistance in hospitals across states. They support medical centers in Washington, Maryland, Texas and Virginia. Injured and transitioning marines are cared under the mentor-ship of Marine-4life program.

To capture the minds of young Americans at an early age, the youth program seeks to ensure that they understand and embrace the spirit of marines. This is possible through training and other programs targeting different institutions. The Boy Scouts of America is such an initiative as well as the fitness program for high and elementary schools. They have a scholarship fund to support education of needy families or relatives to veterans and toys for tots as part of their target activities.

MCL has placed the interests of veterans high among their priorities. The organization scrutinizes and shapes any legislation that will affect marines and military activity. Veterans have a central organization with a national outlook to address their issues and others that are of national concern. Active marines are served under the Veterans Service Officer Program. Volunteer work by members is offered in VA hospitals across the country.

The honor and fun society of the MCL is the Military Order of the Devil Dogs. This wing honors outstanding work by its members. There is an auxiliary wing, as well, that hopes to promote the interests of Marines and their dependents. This group advocates for patriotism by encouraging citizens and members to remain faithful to the American institutions.

The operations of Marine Corps League are spread in different parts of the United States. The aim is to offer a united stand on all issues affecting veterans and active service men. The memory and history of marines is held sacred and promoted in all platforms necessary. The main aim of this organization is to promote and protect the interests of marines in all sectors of life.
