Grief Counseling Online Can Be Advantageous

In some instances there is a difference acknowledged between bereavement counseling and therapy. It asserts that the counseling is appropriate when what is considered normal mourning follows a loss such as death or divorce. On the other hand, therapy deals with more complicated feelings of loss in response to the same event. In some cases grief counseling online may be preferable.

A serious reaction can possibly lead to an emotional disorder. It may grow worse over time unless treatment is available. For those who do not want to undergo therapy in person, there is bereavement counseling and therapy available online.

There is a disagreement among professionals regarding the effectiveness of grief therapy. If someone goes through the expected five stages of bereavement, this type of therapy might amplify the severity of their suffering. However, if the individual has already developed a more severe condition, it can be helpful.

Although the succession can vary in some individuals, five stages of grief usually occur in order. They are shock, denial, anger, despair and finally, acceptance. In a pathological case, the bereaved may become stuck in one stage, at which time it turns into a serious condition.

When death of a loved one or a divorce occurs, it can be shocking. The person might have a hard time believing that it happened and turn his or her back on reality for a time. Trying to believe it did may cause anger and rage. This may develop into the fourth stage, which is depression and despair.

Stage five brings about acceptance of the sad reality. This does not mean he or she likes it. It does mean the person feels life can continue and he or she will eventually be happy again.

Most professionals believe that going through the grieving process is mandatory. If it is repressed an emotional problem can develop. If other disasters arise to interfere with the process, recovery may not be possible.

It is wise to select a bereavement therapist with a degree and possibly certification in dealing with that specific field. A licensed psychologist is a good choice. It will not be sufficient to talk to someone who calls himself a bereavement counselor, but is a sales person for a funeral parlor.

A potential client should not be hesitant about asking what qualifications an online counselor has. The sales person is a perfectly good choice if you are arranging a burial service. However, if seeking psychological help, someone without qualifications or experience can do actual harm.

The DSM is a reference manual professionals refer to when diagnosing mental disorders. There is a list of criteria that must be met before any pathology can be confirmed. Each illness has its own set of required criteria. Only a certain number from the list must be met for a condition such as clinical depression to be diagnosed.

Bereavement counseling is a service offered online. For the individual who does not want to meet with a therapist in an office, grief counseling online is a good substitution. It has the advantages of being anonymous and there is no travel time needed to meet with the counselor.
