The Life Of Archbishop Fulton Sheen

Fulton John Sheen, was an American bishop born on 8th May, 1895. He become the celebrated archbishop Fulton Sheen. His faith was in the Roman Catholic. The archbishop is well known for his godly teachings on varios TV and radio channels. He was ordained at the Diocese of Peoria, which ushered him into the service for the church. He became a renowned theologian afterwards.

Sheen was born to Delia and Newton Sheen lining in El Paso, Illinois by that time. After him were four brothers. He suffered from Tuberculosis during his infancy stages according to history. From El Paso, the family moved to Peoria from where he first served in church as an altar boy. The church was St. Mary Cathedral.

Archbishop Fulton went to Spalding Institute where he earned his high school valedictorian before proceeding to St. Viator College in Bourbonnais. After completing studies in Bourbonnais, he went to Saint Paul Seminary in Minnesota. He was ordained in September of 1919. He later moved to Wasington for further studies. During his stay in Washington, he served as an altar boy in one of the occasions after being asked by a priest.

Fulton earned his first doctorate from Catholic University of Leuven in the state of Belgium. While in Belgium, he became the first American citizen to be awarded the Cardinal Mercier prize. The following year after earning the award, he moved to Rome to study Theology. He earned his second doctorate degree in the Rome.

Archbishop Fulton served at St, Patrick Church, Soho Square in London as the assistant to the priest. That is where his life as a priest began. He served as am assistant and lectured theology at Edmund College at that same time. They met with Ronald Knox at that college. He started ruling St. Patrick Parish in 1926 after a request by Bishop Edmund Dunne was made to him. He went back to Catholic University to continue lecturing theology after serving the parish for nine months.

Fulton was consecrated bishop on eleventh of June in the year 1951. After the consecration, he served for about 14 years as an auxiliary bishop in New York City. Sheen was the first person to write the first 73 books written in 1925. He began to broadcast his teachings and preaching on the radio in 1930. Some of his teachings are being listened to up to today with thousands of listeners sending letters weekly to the broadcast.

The bishop founded the Sheen Ecumenical Housing Foundation while he was serving in Roshester. The housing foundation lived on during his whole life and is still operating today. Political activities took some of his finances and energy too. He relinguished the bishop position in October, 1969. This came immediately after celebrating the 50th anniversary of life in priesthood.

Shortly after Sheen resigned, he was appointed to become the next Archbishop of Titular See Newport. Pope Paul VI is the one who appointed him. This position allowed him to write more articles, columns, and books. During his entire life, he wrote a total of 73 books.
